„A dreamlike, impressionistic portrait of the Surrealist artist Toyen.“  The Wall Street Journal

„No ordinary work … a visual and aesthetic exercise both elusive and evocative.“ Peter Hames

Forging links between reality and imagination, this is a lyrical portrait of Toyen, a great Czech surrealist who broke into the male-dominated art world. Set during WWII when Toyen was hiding her Jewish lover, fellow artist Jindrich Heisler, in her flat, the film reconstructs their lives in wartime Prague. Linking up fragments and details and mixing archive footage, stylized sequences and re-enactments with natural sounds, Němec  creates a collage of multi-layered images evoking the spirit of the avant-garde and a true sense of the era. A film full of visual poetry.
